Design Miami reveals its newest exhibition platform which invites the world’s best designers, curators, innovators and galleries to present cabinets of curiosity throughout the fair.

Each Curio reveals a total environment of objects, textures, artifacts and ideas that challenge and contextualize familiar design narratives. The program spans the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and emphasizes surprising installations of scientific and technological research alongside handcraft and creative production. The Curios are interspersed amongst Design Miami’s core galleries, infusing the fair’s exhibition program with inventive snapshots of today’s design landscape.

These are the artists you can expect on this edition of Design Miami’s Curio:

Patricia Findlay

Based in New York, Patricia Findlay‘s company represents leading designers, sculptors and painters from around the world.This time Patricia Findlay will be presenting Atelier Biagetti‘s No Sex. A current episode of Atelier Biagetti‘s exploration of contemporary life that goes deep into the human psyche to address the all time greatest obsession: the idea of sex.

The project demonstrates how designers Alberto Biagetti and Laura Baldassari decontextualize visual elements to create a short-circuit between the senses of the body, the preconceptions of the mind and the physical reality of the surrounding environment to create unexpected situations to be experienced rather than viewed. The space itself contains all the expected elements, but the deceptively familiar surroundings are not innocently functional but rather tease the viewer, thus provoking new kinds of behavior around the perception of what sexy is, and around the idea of contemporary design.

Delorenzo Gallery

DeLorenzo Gallery has an international reputation in the field of 20th Century Decorative Arts and has been a dominant and determining force as the market has matured and come into favor. DeLorenzo Gallery is pleased to present original works by the very talented designers and artists Samuel and Dominic Amoia. The brothers have designed a collection of pieces that are limited edition, exclusive to DeLorenzo Gallery. The tables, mirrors and consoles are brilliantly highlighted with natural materials in various colors and textures that entice the senses. The collection has been well received and pieces have been commissioned by worldwide collectors, designers, architects and the design community at large.

The abstract console features a base of geometric patterns, coated in brass shavings, topped with a surface of Italian onyx. This beautiful combination juxtaposes the soft look of the onyx with the sharpness of the brass shavings. The kidney-shaped table uses this same design element of the onyx surface set atop a series of legs coated with brass shavings, with the legs attached by nubs that protrude above the table surface.

Michael John & Alan

Michael Jon & Alan will present a selection of chairs by the iconic and influential designer Charles Hollis Jones. The booth will be topped with a chandelier produced by the designer for the exhibition. Created entirely out of acrylic and polished nickel-plated steel, the chairs will be arranged within an immersive treatment that creates a sense of placelessness which functions as multiple theatrical modalities.
