Design News: Detroit is the first official City of Design – If you still think Detroit won’t be able to make a comeback, it’s time to think again. The Motor City just earned major recognition for its contributions to the world of design. And it’s the first city in America to ever receive such an honor.
According to Arch Daily, Detroit was recently recognized as the country’s first official “City of Design,” thanks to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, and its Creative Cities Network.
A total of 116 cities from 54 countries make up the network, and are recognized for their contributions across seven creative fields, including crafts & folk art, design, film, gastronomy, literature, music and media arts.
Detroit was able to secure its place as a City of Design thanks in part to the application submitted by the Detroit Creative Corridor Center, or DC3, an organization committed to fostering creative fields in the state.
To further bolster the application, Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Stephen McGee created a video that highlights Detroit’s relationship with design. Check it out below, and if it inspires you to move to Detroit, know you won’t be alone. It is one of the best cities for 20-somethings, after all.
