Award winning architecture project by Leroy Street Studio features light-filtering structure and contemporary decor.

New York based firm Leroy Street Studio recently designed a residence for an avid outdoors man which features generous spaces, repetitive timber frames and a  light-filtering structure. Situated in Wainscott the building results in a singular volume made with delicate trusses and timber slats.

The Louver House, located on the edge of an agricultural reserve, was designed to serve as such. Its appearance refers traditional barn structures which are common in the area, having a timber framing, a rectangular shape and a single pitched roof.

The entrance leads visitors through the building’s louvered skin into a two-story foyer that overlooks a tall interior garden courtyard. In this space there’s a tick oak staircase that creates an elegant echo towards the outside landscape.

The residence’s living spaces are elevated to the second floor in order to capture long views. These spaces are divided from the outdoor porch by a stone fireplace. The vaulted ceiling emphasizes the building’s traditional barn while providing a lofty feel to the space.

According to the designers “Teak and high-tech steel trusses support continuous lengths of skylight overhead in an elegant and pragmatic design,”.

Above the living spaces, an upper mezzanine opens to a rooftop garden which is connected to a study tucked into the rafters. In all, five outdoor courts and garden spaces are unified under the roof providing a simplistic harmony between the spaces.

The master suit is located on the second floor, while the ground level is inhabited by guest rooms, a billiards room and a lounge area that opens to the outdoors. In the basement there’s a wine cellar, a gym and a steam room, as well as laundry facilities and storage areas.
