New York, aka Big Apple is an international center for design. World-famous architects and designers have lived there and learned there. Known as the city of talents, weather in terms of music, cinema and art, the city supports its people with some of the best design museumsin the world.
Museum of Arts and Design
The mission is to collect, display, and interpret objects that document contemporary and historic innovation in craft, art and design. Originally founded as the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, the space focuses on handmade objects, especially items that stretch the imagination with their inventive materials.
Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum is devoted exclusively to historic and contemporary design. Cooper Hewitt educates, inspires and empowers people through stunning exhibitions and educational programs. Housed in the former home of steel, the design museum’s building is a landmark on its own. The museum also encompasses the National Design library, a tremendous historical resource for design.
AIGA National Design Center Gallery
The gallery at the American Institute of Graphic Artsprides itself in presenting exhibitions on contemporary designwhich are, themselves, design pieces. The content of each exhibition is presented in a narrative format which both looks beautiful and explains the relevance of the work on display.
The New York School of Interior Design Gallery is unique in its ability to host student work throughout the year, allowing the development of future design careers. It also features professional work by well-known designers. Definitely a place for design interests that are looking for inspiration and get to know the best trends in the field.
