Places to Visit While You’re at Basel 2017

[wp_ad_camp_2]

If you happen to be in Basel this month or already scheduled Basel 2017 in your agenda these are the places you must visit while you’re there!

One of the greatest art events is upon us, Basel 2017, and of course we at My Design Agenda couldn’t stop thinking about what to do in such an amazing city. Switzerland was never considered to be the number one place for tourism, let’s be honest, but it has some of the most incredible attractions for design lovers.

Basel is Switzerland’s oldest university city. Historic landmarks of the city include the large market square with its richly decorated red sandstone town hall and the late Romanesque-Gothic cathedral.

During a walk through the old town you can not only find small boutiques and antique book shops but also modern design stores. A visit to the “Läckerli Huus” to try the traditional Basel honey cake is also worth to try out.

The city has the highest range of museums in the country, reaching almost 40. Internationally known museums, such as the Basel Art Museum, the museum devoted to the iron sculptor Jean Tinguely, the Fondation Beyeler and the Museum of Cultures attract a great many visitors, as do several galleries and playhouses.

Even if you’re not wanting to attend Basel 2017 (you should definitely reconsider by the way), you should take the time to visit these places if you happen to be there.

Antikenmuseum

Basel’s Museum of Antiquities is dedicated to people who love history and culture. It features Egyptian, Greek, Italian, Etruscan and Roman works of art, covering antiquity from about 4000 BC to the 6th century AD. The most impressive exhibitions are the sculptures and Greek vases, although there are outstanding items of gold jewelry, bronze sculptures and clay figures. A must!

Basel Minster

Basel Minster is placed in the highest point on Minster Hill and can be easily spotted by its prominent spires and brightly patterned roof tiles. The Münsterplatz is an elegant 18th-century square that was built of red sandstone from the french Vosges mountains, a stunning area that surrounds the Gothic church.  If you’re a fan of architecture you might want to keep this one in the agenda.

Haus zum Kirschgarten

The Haus zum Kirschgarten  was built between 1775 and 1780 in the early Classical style architecture and is today one of Switzerland’s best museums of domestic life. Throughout the 25 furnished rooms are displays of the furniture of a wealthy 18th-century commercial family as well as internationally important collections of decorative arts.

The Pauls-Eisenbeiss Foundation’s collection of porcelain, a significant watch and clock collection, and major groups of Basel silver and scientific instruments are also displayed!

Vitra Design Museum

Since Basel lies right on the international border, the Vitra Design Museum, although considered to be a Basel institution, is a five-minute train ride just across the German Border from central Basel. By any measure, it is one of the world’s most important design museums.

The building itself is a landmark, it was designed by Canadian architect Frank O. Gehry. Inside you can find exhibitions of current and historical design trends and themes. What is most interesting about it is that the displays are often provocative and invite interaction.

Dollhouse museum

If you’re a collector of vintage dolls, this is the ultimate paradise for you. The Spielzeug Welten Museum displays a collection of more than 6,000 toys, including dolls, stuffed animals, dollhouses and carousels, that are definitely not just for children.

The dollhouses are the most impressive, not only the historical examples but the newly commissioned works of the artists who create rooms and shops in miniature. Even if you don’t have the opportunity to get inside, just make sure to take a look at its six display-sized windows that are facing the street.
