[wp_ad_camp_2]

His design is recognized in the world’s most important tradeshows, one of them Design Miami/Basel where he could exhibit his own definition of “What is Luxury?”. His work is a beautiful intersection of value and aesthetics, where authenticity and history become a powerful source for creating possible future scenarios.

A Small Conversation with Marcin Rusak

Taking inspiration from his father and grandfather, both flower growers, Marcin Rusak Studio creates authentic pieces of art taking advantage of the empowering beauty of Nature’s resources. Materials such as Resin, flowers and Shellac are used to create every day, decorative objects which give a whole new meaning to design.

A Small Conversation with Marcin Rusak

After following his work for a while now and had the chance to get to know him a little better this past January at MO, we decided to engage Rusak on a small interview to share with you how’s the man behind Marcin Rusak Studio like, and what has influenced him to create such beautiful art through his own words.

How have you decided to embrace your profession?

I think it grew into me over the years. I thought I will be an architect or work in diplomacy but life events and circumstances lead me to study design and shortly afterwards I knew I want to have my own studio.

Who inspired to grow, personally and professionally?

There has been many people of great importance to me all the way, both in academic and professional worlds. I would say biggest influence on my work had Sarah Van Gameren from studio Glithero who was my tutor in the Royal College of Art. I always admired her very conceptual way of thinking and openness to ideas. Personally, looking back I think my family had a great deal in inspiring me to do things, they always encouraged me in anything I chose to do and are still of great help to me.

What is your philosophy on work and life?

I think I am still trying to process life as it emerges in different aspects. I always believed that trusting your intuition is important and surrounding yourself with people you admire and care about. With my practice I would say there are few themes / philosophies that I try to explore and investigate: ephemerality, value and consumption.
Describe yourself in three words.

Optimistic, impatient, friendly

Is there anything exciting that you are working on at the moment that you can tell us about? Any new projects?

I am very excited about this year in general as so many things have already happened and there is still to come. We are currently working on the commission for Jerwood Visual Arts where about 30 perishable sculptures will be presented in a form of installation in different stages of decay. The show opens on the 27th of Juneso we are really busy right now.

Can you talk about one of your favorite projects that you have developed?

I enjoy working on all of the projects in the studio but the perishable series, more sculptural work is where my heart is.

Besides Maison et Objet Paris, which major international events do you attend/follow to get all the latest novelties?

I have shown previously in Design Miami in both Switzerland and US, Design Days Dubai, London Design Festival and many other European fairs but I wouldn’t say I’m necessarily following latest novelties there. It all happens more subconsciously and probably with a use of internet I think.

Which professionals do you admire, in the design and architecture world?

I think there are too many to list! My all time greatest are Scarpa and Giacometti but I could probably name few in any given field of art and design. There are so many great people out there with amazing ideas.

What are your favorite materials to work with?

I think this would still be resin – both organic and synthetic. It is such a versatile material which can be shaped and molded into almost anything with endless finishing possibilities.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

Hopefully continuing enjoying what I do and having a beautiful family on my own.
