[wp_ad_camp_2]

The 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, are officially underway and will last through February 25. For that reason, My Design Agenda decided to promote a small guide of everything you need to know about this historic Games and we’ll tell you who won the first medals!

The host of the Games is Pyeongchang. This city is one of the main urban points of South Korea and is located just about 125 Kilometers east of Seoul, but it’s closest to the controversial Demilitarized Zone that separated North and South Korea, one of the most dangerous places on Earth.

This will be the second Olympic Games held in South Korea, but the first Winter Olympic Games. This event recently gave rise to the opportunity to promote a historic approximation between the South and North Koreas that are in a state of war since the 60’s. North Korea has agreed to send a delegation of athletes, as well as a cheering squad and a performance-art troupe. It will be the first time North Korea has participated in the Winter Games in eight years. It will also be the first time that North Korea participates in a major event in South Korea, since the country boycotted the 1988 Olympic Summer Games in Seoul, South Korea.

After South Korea, the Winter Games will move to Beijing in 2022. The truth is that Asia is in vogue in terms of hosting the Olympic Games. It’s important to remember that Beijing hosted the Summer Games and 2008 and that the next Summer Games will be held in Tokyo in 2020!

Created by designer Lee Suk-woo, the medals for these Winter Games feature dynamic diagonal lines and three-dimensional consonants from the Korean alphabet that stretch across the face, according to the official website. They’ve been crafted with a texture to resemble tree trunks, symbolizing the work that has gone into developing Korean culture and the Games themselves. They look great, but keep in mind that since the first Olympic Games that the Gold Medals aren’t made from actual Gold, so their economic value is quite low!

And who is the mascot? The 2018 Winter Olympic Games Mascot is a white tiger named Soohorang. As you know the tiger is closely associated with Asian and Korean mythology and culture, but in Korea has a stronger meaning because is considered a familiar figure in Korean folk tales as a symbol of trust, strength, and protection. With features that resemble the popular Anime shows, we can say that Soohorang fits perfectly in these Games.
