Venice Biennale 2018 Has Started! This past weekend marked the beginning of one of the most iconic Art Events of Europe. The Venice Biennal has been a creative institution of Italy and of the World itself for over 120 years. It’s without a doubt one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world and it reaches every major art, design, creative and industrial branch, like Cinema, Art, Theather, Music and Architecture.

As we said, this past weekend marked the official beginning of the Venice Biennale 2018 with the Inauguration of the 16th International Architecture Exhibition, one of the most recent projects of the Venice Biennale but one of the most important ones.

With the theme of Freespace, the International Architecture Exhibition/ Biennale Architettura 2018 aims to present to the public scrutiny several examples, proposals, elements – built or unbuilt – of work that exemplifies essential qualities of architecture which include the modulation, richness and materiality of surface; the orchestration and sequencing of movement, revealing the embodied power and beauty of architecture.

Following this theme, the architectural organization of the Biennal directed by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara decided to award the famous Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura with the prestigious Golden Lion for the Best Project of This Year’s theme.

Souto Moura submitted to the Biennal the project “Vo De Jour” that comprises two aerial photographs positioned side by side, showing the São Lourenço do Barrocal estate in Alentejo, Portugal. This famous architect transformed an imponent old farm into a luxury hotel, but that transformation was so clinical and creative that impressed the judging panel that considered the project and the two images that illustrate it an amazing example of the “essential relationship between architecture, time and place”.

Switzerland won the Golden Lion for the best national participant, with its exhibition “Svizzera 240: House Tour”. This exhibition showcases the bland fittings commonly selected for new-build housing or rented apartments. The judges called it “a compelling installation that is at once enjoyable while tackling the critical issues of scale in domestic space”.

As for rising talents, Jan de Vylder, Inge Vinck and Jo Taillieu from Belgium won the Silver Lion for the most promising young participant. This trio presented in their collective project a creative solution for inserting new structures inside an old building.

You’ll be able to see these projects and many others in Venice at the Architectural Exhibition of Venice Biennale. The awards were already handed out, but the Award Ceremony only marked the first day of the event, which continues until the 25th November 2018. Don’t miss it!
