The theme of Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne 2019 will give emphasis to the impact of design on the community and will try to enhance a multicultural approach that goes beyond the ephemeral individualism of our society. The principal curator of Biennale Internationale, American Lisa White, spoke of the different vision that gave birth to this year theme: “A key focus of contemporary design is how to live in multi-generational, multi-cultural, multi-attitudinal societies”. So, using design not only to better understand ourselves but also others’ perspective. Thus, the line “Me, You, Nous”.
WHAT TO EXPECT

ÉQUI-LIBRE
Chinese design is the main character of this exhibition. The relationship between environmental issues and economic growth will the focal point of Fan Zhe’s journey to mainland China and its ever-changing design. Four UNESCO City of Design (Shenzhen, Shanghai, Wuhan, and Beijing) will give their contribution about significant issues: the challenges that design experiences compared to the Chinese growth rate; fast urbanization and its consequences in the future; Smart Cities and artificial intelligence.
SYSTEM, NOT STUFF
Common ground is the fundamental factor when we talk about design and technologies and their strategies. We can’t think about design pieces like simple object with no links to the society but like systems in which aesthetic, functionality and productive methods all concur to the creation itself.
