DESIGN DISTRICT 2019 EVENT GUIDE
WHEN & WHERE
Three are the important days: 5, 6 and 7 June 2019 (only the 7th the event will be accessible to the public and students). The location of this 16th edition will be Van Nelle Factory, the iconic factory in the Rotterdam. During the three-day event, thousands of visitors – 7,618 visitors just during the last edition – will converge in the over 10,000m2 of the factory, where 200 of the finest brands will contend the visitors’ attention with each other. A particular emphasis has been accentuated by Design District 2019 about having a direct experience: stands are created to be small and the designers have the possibility to display only the top and newest products, thus making it an “uncluttered trade fair”, in which it’s very easy to recognize visions and trends.
WHAT YOU CAN’T MISS
PLASTIC WHALE BY MARIUS SMIT (June 6)
Born from the mind of its founder Marius Smit, the Plastic Whale project is based in the concept of taking action to save ourselves and the planet from plastic: starting as plastic phishing events, they managed to build new boats using plastics and become a new company receiving funds and contributions. The next step has been managing to build high-end office furniture from Amsterdam Canal Plastic. “From trash to treasure” has never been so appropriate!
CULTURE & IDENTITY BY KITTY DE GROOT (June 5 – 6)
Kitty de Groot, a design journalist at Inside Information, gives a lecture oriented on the meaning of identity and culture related to interior: what are the relations between each term and the way they connect with each other. “What makes people feel at home at work and proud of their work environment? How do you step into the skin of your customer, to come to his unique core, his individuality to design from the interior?”.
DESIGNERS DISTRICT
In addition to the world-renowned designers and artists, there are also 20 emerging or self-producing designers ready to show their potential to the Netherlands and the whole world. The special presentation will be held in the old distribution center.
STUDENT WILLEM DE KOONING AND HMC
After the success of the first time, Product Design students from Willem de Kooning Academy will be at Design District 2019. First-year students and recent graduates will display their works, right next to HMC college’s students. Don’t miss it out!
