This June the Los Angeles Design Festival is starting again with its special motto “Design with purpose” and you can get a kick out of the coolest design event in LA, especially because it’s going to explode all over the city. What a wonderful time to conjugate design and the city in a community-supporting event devoted to emphasising its own rich culture and atmosphere. “Honoring our city’s rich design culture” is the event’s main feature, oriented to reach a wide setting and, in this way, being the representation of the richness and diversity of LA. LA FESTIVAL DESIGN AWARDS
June 20th
Join the hip designer crowd on June 20 at the Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles in celebration of creation and talent! Starting with this year RISE Award acknowledging students and recent graduates’ works, to the emerging LA talents recognized with the EDGE Award and the ICON Award – whose aim is to recognize iconic women’s talents – and whose 2019 recipient is Elena Manferdini: with her atelier spanning from design and architecture to fashion and art she doesn’t shy away from any interesting projects.
Some of her last architectural works include the Kaidda Center for Science and Design in Dongguan, China, and the Mei Mei Lou Renovation in Chinatown, DTLA. Her peculiar and colorful projects subtend to more complex and diversified meanings.
MUSEUM OF NEON ART
June 20th – 21st
The Museum of Neon Art in Glendale will be offering for two days neon bending demonstrations, lectures on neon’s history and complimentary gifts to all participants. As a visual bridge between artistic expression and scientific knowledge, the MONA follows through her principles of the preservation, collection, and interpretation of neon, electric and kinetic art. “Even a place visited in our childhood can conjure emotions that make an impact on us through the memories they create”.
Angela Brooks + Lawrence Scarpa, from the collective of architects and designers Brooks & Scarpa, will explain how a certain architectural entity can be impressed into how memory and the creative process to create this kind of lasting impression. Their sustainable designs and their use of conventional material in untraditional ways made them pioneers in their field. With more than a hundred awards in their pockets, they have received the lifetime achievement awards from Interior Design Magazine and the AIA California Council.
