Just as Dubai prides itself on being a place that makes dreams come true, Perkins & Will has been working to make dreams come true there since 2010. The city’s distinctive identity has created a vibrant artistic and cultural life, and the firm is committed to contributing to that life — mixing history, culture, and modernity in their work. King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences | Jeddah
Medical students and researchers are now studying advances in medicines and patient care at a new academic medical center campus, which creates an oasis in the desert setting for the education of future healthcare professionals. The faculties of the site feature a fencing and shading plan, protecting an inner liner of calm and openness with a verdant, contemplative world of courtyards and gardens. A sense of truce is brought inside to the users of the buildings as they move about their day with views through the great expanses of glass.
Kings College Hospital | Dubai
The 100-bed hospital is designed to consider the patient experience, from the moment the patient arrives at the moment they complete their treatment. Studies have shown that as little as three minutes of contact with Nature significantly reduces stress, anxiety, and fear. Multiple green spaces were included for proven improvement to shorter hospital stays. One of those spaces is a roof garden accessible to the public, patients, and staff. Patients experience Nature and skyline views from each room which increases exposure to natural light and in turn induces calm. The design focuses on circulation within and between all interconnected faculties, research buildings, and the adjacent hospital, creating synergies and promoting interdisciplinary education.
Adidas Group AG | Dubai
The new office and showroom space for Adidas needed to represent the office of the future — designed to increase productivity, improve communication, focus on staff health and well-being, and anticipate future headcounts. Perkins & Will’s client asked them to design a space to embody ambition, performance, innovation, technology, sustainability, and collaboration. The office needed to be more than an office, it needed to be a community. So they set out to create a place that helps people perform better, play better, feel better, break records, set trends, and make history — every day and around the world.
Princess Nora Bint Abdulrahman University | Riyadh
The academic faculties of the Nora Bint Abdulrahman University project use innovation as a means of giving back and transforming society. This translates into a vision of community, sustainability, and innovative learning environments in one of the most socio-economically and politically complex regions in the world. Saudi Arabia‘s culture, architectural tradition, and regional climate provided a rich context for the new University. Academic faculties meet these criteria and also advance in learning environments and building technology. The design process included an in-depth analysis of the site, program, and regional culture in order to achieve an in-depth understanding of the project context. This understanding of context as “place” informed an architecture that responds to the architectural heritage, materials, and proportions of the region; and creates innovative learning environments for a changing society.
King Khalid RUH International Airport | Riyadh
Perkins & Will set out to design a space that can facilitate the travel experience for the masses, while still reflecting the culture of the region. The original airport was built over 40 years ago. The firm was tasked with working on Terminal 4, which had been left unused all these years. Terminal 4 was a blank canvas at the end of the airport and acts as a testament to what the airport could become as part of Saudi Arabia‘s 2030 vision. With the overall objective of expansion in mind, they were able to envision a Saudi Arabia 10-20 years from now, where more people and more business are expected, and how the project could be a part of shaping that future.
The Palace Hotel Al Khan | Sharjah
Designed for the guest experience, and respecting the cultural privacy requirement, the luxury suites offer privacy and beautiful views. The spaces are designed to allow guests the freedom to meander and explore the hidden treasures of a bygone era, relax in a spa, enjoy poetry while experiencing fine dining, or join other guests in an open-air amphitheater. All spaces are focused on seamless transitions from architecture to natural landscape. Families connect with Nature and are free to explore and experience the arts and culture that Sharjah is famous for.
