June is a wonderful time for every design aficionado, a lot of design events are happening right now all over the globe: you have plenty of choices to make to organize your schedule or, of you are greedy enough, (that’s the approach we want to encourage when we are talking about design event!) you can try and squeeze as many events as you can in a day! Now, it’s time to talk about one of the most inclusive and diverse design event of the year, the San Francisco Design Week, that is coming back in 2019 with a theme about closeness and union called “CommUNITY”: based on the communion of intents that moves the design community – taking into account every branch of design knowledge – this call for a broader collaboration is the essence of the community’s purpose, the will to unite themselves to discuss about the problems of our world and all the possible solutions that, together, they can think about to “re-think” our future. SAN FRANCISCO DESIGN WEEK 2019 EVENT GUIDE
WHEN & WHERE
This week-long festival will present itself as an entire city event, scattered all over San Francisco, from June 20th to 26th. The SF Design Week is an amazing opportunity to see close how design ideas and trends can enter in contact with an entrepreneurial mentality to create a revolutionary inventive hub, recognized internationally (it’s not by chance that it came alive from the Bay Area!). You will have the chance to see Bay Area start-ups at work, coupled with companies, brands and big thinkers to create an event that “celebrates this spirit of newness by providing unique access to exhibitions and conversations with the designers who are shaping the future”.
WHAT YOU CAN’T MISS
SF DESIGN WEEK HUB
As the central location for the first two days of the event, the SF Design Week HUB (in Pier 27) will be the perfect setting for a specific set of exhibitions, events, and workshops, starting from the SFDW Opening Night Party: a party on the waterfront, on June 20th. Enjoy music, Off The Grid food trucks and much more while celebrating design with interactive installations and exhibitions. You can’t miss, the 2019 Design Awards will be presented here.
GERE KAVANAUGH AND HER COLORFUL COMMUNITY
On June 20th, immerse yourself into the craft and folk atmosphere of the 60s and 70s: join designer Gere Kavanaugh and her co-authors Louise Sandhaus and Kat Catmur to discover more about the California design culture of that time and its important figures, such as Ruth Asawa, Wallace Berman, Frank Gehry, Sister Corita Kent, Charles Moore, Deborah Sussman.
