Top Decorative Lighting Exhibitors at London Design Fair – Innovative contemporary brands who use Vintage aesthetics.
London Design Fair celebrate 10 years in the making this year. But what is this ‘fair’ about, precisely? Jimmy MacDonald, founder and director of Tent London explains: “The London Design Fair is an umbrella brand for Tent London and Super Brands London alongside the other shows we host, for example, 100% Norway and the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland. With the addition of the third-floor space at the Old Truman Brewery, we will be hosting further group shows, country showcases, and themed exhibitions, affording these key facets even greater visibility. For our new name, we decided on the London Design ‘Fair’, in part drawing inspiration from Europe, a region where we carry out a great deal of business and where ‘Fair’ is a familiar term.”
From all the exhibitors available, we made a selection on those who use vintage or craft techniques to explore new forms of lighting design in the contemporary era.
David Pompa is a young interdisciplinary design studio based in Mexico and Austria. Since David grew up in both countries, he developed a strong relation with the Mexican culture and that’s why he came with the idea of working with Oaxaca artisanry, back in 2009, when he saw “Barro Negro” technique for the first time. Mixing these traditions with the last innovations of the market requires new challenges on designing the products, but is also magical to see these ‘boundaries’ come together. See some examples of it.
Servomuto are graphic designer Alessandro Poli and architect Francesca De Giorgi, who together, have been designing and producing lampshades since 2007. The duo is inspired by vintage forms re-searched from an archive that dates back more than 50 years, they then re-interpret the old style of lampshades adding unusual trimmings to salvaged materials such as army blankets, old velvet theater curtains or screen print fabrics with innovative and provocative images commissioned from artists with whom they collaborate.
Vij5 is a Dutch design label with a collection of interior products, characterized by their minimalist aesthetic and functionality. Its founders, Arjan van Raadshooven and Anieke Branderhorst, designed the basis of the product collection and actively seek collaboration with other young designers to expand their collection. The brand has a very personal style and high quality standards. Correct proportions and a balanced composition; the use of pure, honest materials; clear lines and fine details is what the designs have in common.
